Board Members
Sindhu Shankar
President | sshankar9@wisc.edu | she/her/hers
Sindhu is a senior majoring in Microbiology and Economics. She previously volunteered at the UW Hospital in the Burn Unit and currently volunteers in General Surgery Inpatient. She will be a tutor with the PLA and a TA for Biochemistry 501 this upcoming year. In her sophomore year, Sindhu conducted research in an Entomologist Lab. Since her junior year, Sindhu has researched in Dr. Abbott’s Lab on the lipid team at the primate center. Her research project focuses on analyzing the effects of estrogen on brown adipose tissue. Some of her shadowing experiences include shadowing an anesthesiologist, ophthalmologist, orthopedic surgeon, and gynecologist. Sindhu is taking the MCAT this fall and is planning to apply during the 2023 cycle. Outside of AMSA, Sindhu enjoys being outdoors, baking, and traveling!

Lindsey Neumann

Lindsay is a senior majoring in Neurobiology and getting a certificate in Global Health and LGBTQ+ studies. For the past two years, she has worked in Dr. Emborg’s lab at the Primate Center researching Parkinson’s Disease and Stem Cell Replacement Therapy. Lindsay plans to take two gap years and then apply to either Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. programs. She is a respite caregiver for a young girl with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Outside of AMSA, Lindsay loves to spend time at the Arboretum, meditate, do yoga, play piano, and hang out with her roommates.

Tyson Phan

Tyson is a senior majoring in Neurobiology and Psychology and getting a certificate in Disability Rights and Services. Some of his volunteering experiences include the Vietnam Health Project (VHP) and Volunteering Solutions trip to Peru. Tyson has shadowing experience with colorectal, hematology, and minimally invasive surgery. Tyson is currently conducting research through the Berridge Lab of the Psychology Department on campus. He is planning on taking the MCAT in March of 2023 and applying to medical in June of 2023. Outside of AMSA, Tyson is on the board of Badger SPILL and Vietnam Health Project. His hobbies include watching anime, playing badminton and frisbee, and movies.

Niha Patankar

Niha is a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry and Music (Vocal Performance). Niha spends her time volunteering at Meriter with the Healing Beats program since April 2022. She currently shadowings Dr. David Kushner in Gynecologic Oncology and is planning to shadow in Pediatric Cardiology over winter break. Niha conducts research in cancer immunology. Her research project focuses on the metabolism of immune cells in environments similar to cancer tumors. She is planning on taking the MCAT in the Fall of 2023 or Spring of 2024 with the hopes of applying in the 2024 medical school application cycle. Outside of AMSA, Niha is on the Executive Board of the American Cancer Society on campus as well as a Global Committee member of the National Campus and Youth Engagement Team at the American Cancer Society. Currently, she is training in Indian classical Hindustani vocals.

Allison Tomes

Allison is a senior majoring in Biochemistry and Spanish with certificates in Global Health and Leadership. Allison volunteers with Badger Volunteers, the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Meriter, the Ronald McDonald House, River Food Pantry, and Slow Food. She is planning on taking the MCAT in Spring 2023 and is still deciding on applying to medical school in the 2024 or 2025 cycle. In her free time, Allison works as a group cycling instructor at the Nicholas Recreation Center. She loves working out, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Cole Witt

Cole is a junior majoring in Neurobiology and getting certificates in Health Policy and Global Health. Cole volunteers as a Matriculate Advising Fellow to offer free college application advising for high school students. Additionally, he is planning on volunteering in the Pediatric ICU to audit the patient care processes for quality improvement purposes. Cole has several shadowing experiences including two medical oncologists, a radiation oncologist, and a pulmonologist. Since January of 2021, he is conducting research in the Sondel Lab in the Department of Human Oncology. He is planning on taking the MCAT in the Fall of 2023 and will be applying to medical school during the 2024-25 cycle. Outside of AMSA, Cole is the Vice President of the UW Swim Club. He loves to swim and stay active with his friends.

Emma Meyer

Emma is a junior majoring in Neurobiology and getting a certificate in French. Through AMSA, she has volunteered with the Red Cross, the Food Recovery Network, and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Emma also volunteers with Her Campus, a student organization on campus. During her sophomore year, she worked as a lab assistant in the Mura Cranberry Molecular Physiology Lab in the School of Horticulture. This fall, she will be an undergraduate research assistant in the Brain, Language, and Acoustic Behavior (BLAB) Lab. Emma plans on taking the MCAT next summer and plans to apply to medical school during the spring semester of her senior year. Outside of AMSA, Emma is the managing editor for Her Campus Wisconsin, a CNA at a hospital in her hometown, and loves yoga, biking, and reading.

Kennedy Mayer

Kennedy is a junior majoring in neurobiology and getting a certificate in Global Health. She currently volunteers in the UW Hospital Pediatric ICU where she audits the medical staff’s rounding process. In the past, she has shadowed in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic and plans to do more shadowing there in the future. Kennedy conducts research in the Education Neuroscience Lab at the Waisman Center where she works with data and MRI scan processing. She is planning on taking the MCAT at the beginning of 2024 and she will apply to medical one year after graduation in the Spring of 2025. In her free time, Kennedy loves reading, backpacking, and hiking. She is planning on doing a Hoofers trip this fall.

Natalie steybe

Natalie is a junior majoring in Microbiology and Gender and Women’s Studies and getting a certificate in Health and the Humanities. She volunteers with Sex Out Loud and Be The Match on Campus. Natalie spent time shadowing this summer with UW Health Vascular Surgery. As for research, Natalie participated in the Tiny Earth Research Lab. She will be taking the MCAT in the Summer of 2023 and is planning on applying to medical school in May 2024. Outside of AMSA, Natalie is a board member for Be The Match on Campus, she works at the Student Activity Center (SAC), plays guitar and sings, loves to draw and paint, and has many succulents and crystals at home.

Avery Peterson

Avery is a senior majoring in Biology and Microbiology and getting a certificate in Biology Core Curriculum. She is a volunteer with FH King Garden and volunteers with Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Meriter. Avery has past shadowing experiences in plastic surgery and dermatology. Avery is conducting research with the AortaCore Aortic Imaging Lab in the Department of Surgery-UW Hospital. She is planning on taking the MCAT this winter and applying to medical school in June 2023. In her free time, Avery loves to participate in the Biocore Adventure Club, cooking, baking, and graphic design.
JAcob Schleicher

Jacob is a senior majoring in Biochemistry and getting a certificate in Global Health. He volunteers with Crisis Text Line, Lake Country Caring, and Wisconsin Institute of Discovery, and is a high school math tutor. In his sophomore year, Jacob conducted antibiotic research with Tiny Earth. Since his junior year, Jacob has conducted research in Dr. Ryan Westergaard’s Research Lab studying drug treatment inventions and barriers to treatment in rural areas of Wisconsin. He has experience shadowing in Orthopedic Surgery and virtual shadowing. Jacob took the MCAT in January 2022 and is currently applying to medical school. Outside of AMSA, Jacob enjoys playing intramurals with friends, listening to music, and being outside. He also works as a Residential Care Specialist at Rogers Behavioral Health.
COlin Hansen

Colin is a junior majoring in Neurobiology with honors. Colin volunteers annually at a week-long summer camp where he plans activities and oversees the safety of campers. He has shadowing experience with various neurologists at the Neuroscience Group in Appleton, Wisconsin. Recently, Colin formerly assisted with cardiovascular research in the Ge Lab at WIMR. He is currently searching for a lab more focused on his neurology path. Colin just recently took the MCAT this summer and is planning to apply next spring in 2023. Outside of AMSA, Colin is a CNA at Meriter Hospital and he loves being outdoors and traveling.
Isaac King

Isaac is a sophomore majoring in Neurobiology and Global Health and getting a certificate in Leadership. Isaac volunteers as a Matriculate Advising Fellow to offer free college application advising for high school students. He is an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Learning, Representations, and Technology Lab in the Education Psychology Department. Isaac plans to take the MCAT in Spring 2024 and apply to medical school in the 2025 cycle. Outside of AMSA, Isaac is involved in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS@UW) and is the Patient Access and Service Chair.
Natalie Hintz

Natalie is a junior majoring in Biology and getting two certificates in Health and Humanities and Gender and Women’s Studies. She volunteers with Badger Volunteers and Our Lady of Hope Clinic. Natalie participated in the Summer Surgery Shadowing Program at UW and has experienced other clinical shadowing. She currently conducts Kidney Transplant Research at Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR). Natalie plans to take the MCAT in the Summer of 2023 and plans to apply for medical school in the 2024 cycle. Outside of AMSA, Natalie loves doing karate, figure skating, hiking, crocheting/knitting, and caring for her plants.
Stevie Ward

Stevie is a senior majoring in Microbiology and getting certificates in Global Health and Biocore Curriculum. Stevie volunteers with Badger Volunteers, Our Lady of Hope Clinic, the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Meriter, and with Biocore Outreach Ambassadors. Her shadowing experiences consist of virtual shadowing and she is planning on participating in the UW Health Surgical Shadowing program this fall. Stevie is part of the Undergraduate Research Scholars, Food Research Institute Summer Scholars, and she conducts research in the Applied Food Research Laboratory. Stevie took the MCAT this past summer and is planning on applying in June 2023. Outside of AMSA, she loves to rock climb, watch bad dating shows, and spend time outdoors.
Jonathan Bryan

Jonathan is a junior majoring in Neurobiology, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Psychology and getting certificates in Leadership and Health and the Humanities. He volunteers at Advocate Aurora Health (Med/Surg Cardiac), St. Joseph Food Program, Thrivent Fundraiser, and Badger Volunteer as an English-learning and Elementary Tutor. Jonathan has experience shadowing General/Trauma Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and a Neonatologist. He conducts research in Dr. Wang’s Lab in the Waisman Center where he works in Biostatistics and Medical Informatics. He is taking the MCAT in Spring 2023 and applying to medical school in Summer 2023. Outside of AMSA, Jonathan is a Wisconsin Idea Fellowship Recipient, Center for Religion and Global Citizenry Fellow, Executive of External Affairs for MADVOC, and a College of Letters and Science Dean’s Ambassador.
Navya Tarikere

Navya is a junior majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and getting a certificate in Global Health. She volunteers her time as an American Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador. She also spends time with the SSM-Madison GI Surgical Unit and as a Patient Resource Navigator at UW Community Clinic. Navya has shadowing experience in Surgical Oncology at UW Hospital. Currently, she is an undergraduate research assistant in the Department of Neuroscience researching structural associations of GABA A inhibitory receptors. Outside of AMSA, Navya loves to participate in Art Club and swimming.
